The members of the Regional Universities Network work in collaboration to pursue three key objectives:
- To provide policy advice to government, particularly with regard to tertiary education and regional development.
- To strengthen and promote the contributions of regional universities to regional and national development.
- To build institutional capacity and sustainability through the sharing of best practice in educational delivery, training, research and organisational management, particularly with reference to regional contexts.

CQUniversity Australia is one of Australia’s most engaged, supportive and responsive universities, focused on making higher education and research more accessible and relevant. It has more than 10 campuses, study centres and research institutes in regional Queensland, major capital cities, and Geraldton in Western Australia. CQUniversity is also a major distance education provider.
Federation University Australia is both the nation’s newest university and the country’s third oldest tertiary education institution, spanning more than 140 years via its predecessor institutions. It is Australia’s only regional, multi-sector university and is a pivotal provider of postsecondary education for regional Victoria. FedUni has campuses in Ballarat, in Gippsland in eastern Victoria, and the Wimmera in western Victoria (Horsham, Ararat and Stawell).
Southern Cross University is a multi-campus regional University with a vibrant profile of engaged teaching and research and a strong capacity in distance education delivery. It has a student population of more than 9,000 equivalent full-time students studying at its campuses, or with collaborating institutions within Australia and internationally. SCUis expanding, with a new campus on the Gold Coast as well as campuses in Lismore, which houses the majority of the University’s academic and research units, Coffs Harbour, and The Hotel School Sydney.
The University of New England (UNE) is a regionally based, globally networked university that is renowned for the quality of its student experience and the excellence of its research. The University was Australia’s first regional university, it was the first Australian provider of offcampus tertiary education and it is now a leader in online innovation and flexible tertiary education delivery. UNE is one of the largest and fastest growing online providers of higher education in Australia – 78% of its students are studying fully online with a further 10% studying via mixed mode. UNE’s main campus is located in Armidale, NSW. There are also ten regional study centres and a growing international network of partner institutions. In 2013, UNE opened its first FutureCampus in Parramatta.
The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is a leading provider of on-campus and flexible learning programs within Australia and globally. USQ has campuses in Toowoomba, Fraser Coast and Springfield (Brisbane). With its close association with industries and communities, the University’s programs are relevant and its graduates have the knowledge and skills to ensure they are work ready. Its educational offerings reflect the changing needs of society, from Arts, including Creative Arts, Business, Law and Education to Sciences, Engineering and Surveying.
Since its establishment in 1996, the University of the Sunshine Coast has made a significant impact on the economic and cultural development of its region, serving a growing catchment from Brisbane’s northern suburbs through to Bundaberg. USC has around 9,000 students and continues to be one of Australia’s fastest growing universities. Demand for USC programs is strong, with plans to double enrolments in the next decade. The University is also in a period of rapid research development and growth.
